well, that's annoying

Have realized I haven't been getting most of my LJ comment alerts. Just caught up on them.

Off to the con

Orycon starts in just a few hours. i haven't started packing yet. Just organizing stuff in piles. And we have an hour drive to get there. Sigh.

Guess I'd better sign off and go do something useful. If I have connectivity and time to catch my breath I may check in. But don't plan on it.

The Obligatory TDay menu

TDayDinner was shared with friends. Friends friends (meaning Quakers). Friends friends who are also vegans. Ergo, not a turkey in sight. There was, however,

Carnival squash (a bit like bicolor acorn, only as intensely flavored as butternut) stuffed with a pilaf of wild rice and hazelnuts
Cornbread (made with maple syrup, soy milk, and brown rice flour instead of wheat 'cause Dave it wheat-intolerant
Yams
Mashed potatoes with herbs
Steamed zuccini
Apple crisp with pecan/cinnamon/oat topping
Dave's homemade "Zardoz" wine

All of it very yummy. We talked for about 5 hours on everything from African art and the joys of museums to hypochondria to the worst movies we'd ever seen to whether it's important our particular genetic makeup lives on to amazing stories about Aunt Frances in the Yukon.

Got up this morning, did 30 minutes of mat Pilates, made oatmeal (all right, with apple and dried apricot bits and vanilla). Hope to do some writing and work on the upcoming Book View Cafe posts and chapters of Hastur Lord./i>

Many thanks

for all the good wishes on our anniversary.

Little did we think 39 years ago when we marched back down the aisle with bagpipes -- T wore his kilt -- that we would have such a long roller coaster ride!

Time flies

39 years ago today, T and I exchanged wedding vows in a Lutheran ceremony surrounded by friends and family. I am very thankful for every one of those years. We've had our ups and downs, like any marriage. I'm still very glad he's the one I chose to spend my life with.

We have always celebrated our anniversary on Thanksgiving Day -- that way he can't forget. This year the anniversary and T day coincide again. Doesn't happen often, when it does, we are reminded of one more thing to be thankful for.

Happy turkey day!

To those of you who celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful day! My pumpkin pie is already in the oven. Once it's finished, I'll get on the exercise bike for a while, and at least pretend that it will make a difference in regards to the feast I'll consume later today.

Thoughts on giving thanks )

A book reviewer after my own heart

Lol! I just stumbled across this review at Goodreads and had to share it. I am sooooooooo glad I'm not a mommy and don't have to deal with these all important issues. Sounds like Shelf of Shame material to me :p

Long Ago And Not Very Far Away

Long ago Toby got me to go to a Thanksgiving Buffet at a fancy hotel. I expected it to be a dreary meal, but I ended up having a great time. After trying different places, Toby and I decided that the Omni Hotel downtown had the best food for the money. The first year we went there they had a band. G was about two. At one point he toddled over to the drummer and the drummer let him hold his brushes. G started drumming with them and the drummer put him up on the drum stool. G kept banging away and after a bit, the band started playing a song. G kept good time and played through the whole song. When it was over, everyone in the room clapped. The drummer let G keep the brushes. I'm pretty sure he still has them.

We are going to the Omni today. I will think of Toby and the drummer while G and I chow down on fancy food and delicious desserts.

Today I am thankful for friends, family, cats and washing machines.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Here's G at the Omni with the drummer way back when:

Birds in the Roasters

So the birds went in on time, before 7 am. Frosty morning, soon to warm. Clear and lovely. One set of guests has already let me know that illness hit and they're not coming. (This is why the word for the day is "flexibility. Sometimes I get more, sometimes fewer, guests.)

If the train left on time, Distant Guest should be having a ride through late-fall/winter Texas on a gorgeous crisp, clear morning, and arrive at Austin to be met by Longstanding Traditional Guests. Other guests from various locations will be coming (or not coming, depending on their health, whether the car has flat tires, etc.) and so I need to get up from this chair and leap into action again. Or...something.

That was a bad idea.

Feeling v bouncy this morning. Quite looking forward to teaching.

Boss greeted me, said 'you sound worse'. I denied this.

Thirty mins in asthma got so bad had to leave them to work alone. Left after one hour. Have seen nurse and have prescription for stronger drugs. Currently in bed with cat. She has this strange idea that if she sits on my chest I will feel better.

Done for the Day

Two pies are in the refrigerator: pumpkin and pumpkin-brownie-volcano. One attempt to do something creative with leftover brownie batter (very thick brownie batter) and somewhat dated refrigerated pie dough...which became an interesting art object in the oven...is--due to lack of refrigerator space--resting on a trivet of stuffing-mix packets in the large soup pot with a lid, to protect it from things that go scritch-scritch in the night.

The alarm rings at six. Turkeys go in the oven by seven. And then the fun begins (there's a little bit of sarcasm in that statement.) Guests arrive. Other food arrives with them. More guests arrive. Etc. It will all come together. It always does.
