MICHAEL CHABON WINS A NEBULA

I have to say I'm delighted that The Yiddish Policemen's Union won a Nebula. If you haven't read it yet, do yourself a favor.

(And if you want more encouragement, you could look up my review in a previous blog: "What Makes a Story Science Fiction.")

The book is also up for the Hugo and the Sidewise Awards.
Deservedly so, I think. It's not a rehash of the same old same old that we so often see. I've been making note of how many good stories there are that get published outside our genre yet are at least speculative in part. (Some day I'll do another book review.) Maybe we should all take a leaf out of Kurt Vonnegut's play book and insist that out work NOT be marketed as science fiction? We might increase our sales.
Just finished the audio book of "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay". Pretty cool. Waiting for YPM to make it to half-price books on audio.
I haven't explored audio books. Maybe I should? ( Gordon at F&SF sent me a disc with a professional actor reading one of my stories -- and of course, I got to hear the wonderful actors at the Beverley Hills Public Library reading from the lingster stories -- so I know how a trained actor can make a story come alive. Gotta do more in that direction!
Since I drive so far to work (work, btw, is becoming a very expensive habit these days), audio books are about the only reading I get done. That and short stories. It's so hard to fit in a novel anywhere.
There are so many new ways that writers need to think about for selling/publicizing their work. It's not that I'm averse to trying new directions; it's more that I feel like a dinosaur at times, relying on the younger generation for direction.
Well, here's some advice about audio books -- make sure the vast majority of them are on CD instead of tape. :) When I go to Half-Price Books, the vast majority of overstock I see coming through are books-on-tape, so IMHO I don't think they're selling very well.
I'll try to remember that! :-)
